Apnea Maldives Mask Care & Anti-Fog Guide
Diving Mask Care & Anti-Fog Guide
Clear vision underwater starts here.
Clear vision is essential for safety, comfort, and confidence while diving or freediving.
This guide explains why masks fog, how to prepare a new mask, the best anti-fog methods, and how to care for your mask properly.
Why New Diving Masks Fog
All new diving masks may fog during initial use — this is completely normal.
During manufacturing, a thin silicone film remains on the inside of the lens.
This invisible layer causes fogging and must be removed before first use.
✔️ Once this layer is removed, fogging is greatly reduced or eliminated.
Important Safety Information
Please read carefully before cleaning your mask.
- These instructions apply ONLY to tempered glass lenses
- ❌ Do NOT use any of the following methods on:
- Plastic lenses
- Anti-fog coated lenses
Using incorrect methods may cause permanent damage to the lens or silicone skirt.
Always proceed carefully and responsibly.
First-Time Mask Preparation (Silicone Removal)
Method 1: Flame Cleaning
(Advanced – Use With Extreme Caution)
This method is suitable for tempered glass lenses only.
Steps:
- Hold a lighter or candle flame approximately 5 cm (2 inches) below the inside of the lens
- Move the flame evenly across the lens surface
- The lens will darken as the silicone residue burns off
- Allow the mask to cool completely
- Wipe the lens clean using a soft, dry cloth
⚠️ Never expose the silicone skirt to flame
⚠️ Never use this method on plastic or coated lenses
Method 2: Toothpaste Cleaning (Recommended)
This is the safest and most commonly recommended method.
What you need:
White, non-gel toothpaste
Steps:
- Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the inside of each lens
- Gently rub with your finger for 2–3 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
- Repeat 2–3 times if necessary
✔️ This method may also be used before dives if fogging persists
⚠️ Rinse well to avoid eye or skin irritation
Fog Prevention – Before Every Dive
Even after preparation, anti-fog treatment is recommended before each dive.
Option 1: Baby Shampoo / Mild Body Wash
- Apply a tiny drop inside the lens
- Spread evenly with your finger
- Rinse lightly (leave a thin invisible film)
Option 2: Commercial Anti-Fog Solution
- Apply 1–2 sprays inside the lens
- Spread evenly
- Rinse lightly with fresh or salt water
Option 3: Saliva Method (Traditional)
- Apply saliva evenly inside the lens
- Rinse lightly only
If Your Mask Fogs Underwater
Fogging underwater is normal and easy to fix.
Steps:
- Slightly lift the top of the mask to let a small amount of water in
- Swirl the water across the lens
- Look upward, press the top of the mask frame, and gently exhale through your nose
✔️ Vision will be restored immediately
Mask Care & Best Practices
To keep your mask performing at its best:
- Clean your mask regularly to remove salt and debris
- Apply anti-fog before every dive
- Avoid touching the inside of the lens with dirty fingers
- Store your mask in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight
- Replace anti-fog solution when effectiveness decreases
