How to Stop Your Diving Mask from Fogging | Apnea Maldives
Diving Mask Care & Anti-Fog Guide
Why New Diving Masks Fog
Clear vision underwater starts here.
Clear vision is essential for safety, comfort, and confidence while diving or freediving.
This comprehensive guide explains the causes of mask fogging, details the proper preparation of a new mask, outlines the most effective anti-fog methods, and provides best practices for long-term mask care.
Important Safety Information
Please read these instructions carefully before attempting to clean your mask.
Crucial Distinction: These preparation methods apply ONLY to tempered glass lenses.
Do NOT use any of the following preparation methods on:
- Plastic lenses
- Anti-fog coated lenses
Using incorrect methods may cause permanent damage to the lens or the silicone skirt. Always proceed carefully and responsibly.
First-Time Mask Preparation (Silicone Removal)
Method 1: Toothpaste Cleaning (Recommended)
This is the safest and most commonly recommended method for removing the manufacturing silicone film.
Requirements:
- White, non-gel toothpaste
Procedure:
- Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the inside of each lens.
- Gently rub the toothpaste across the entire lens surface with your finger for 2–3 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Repeat this process 2–3 times if necessary to ensure complete removal of the film.
Note: This method may also be used periodically before dives if persistent fogging occurs. Ensure you rinse the mask extremely well to avoid any eye or skin irritation from residual toothpaste.
Method 2: Flame Cleaning (Advanced)
Warning: Use With Extreme Caution. This method is suitable for tempered glass lenses ONLY.
Procedure:
- Hold a lighter or candle flame approximately 5 cm (2 inches) below the inside of the lens.
- Move the flame evenly across the lens surface. You will observe the lens darkening as the silicone residue burns off.
- Allow the mask to cool completely.
- Wipe the lens clean using a soft, dry cloth.
Warning: Never expose the silicone skirt to the flame, as it will melt and ruin the mask. Never use this method on plastic or coated lenses.
Fog Prevention – Before Every Dive
Even after proper initial preparation, applying an anti-fog treatment is highly recommended before every dive to ensure optimal visibility.
Option 1: Baby Shampoo or Mild Body Wash
- Apply a tiny drop to the inside of the lens.
- Spread it evenly across the surface with your finger.
- Rinse lightly, leaving a thin, invisible film on the glass.
Option 2: Commercial Anti-Fog Solution
- Apply 1–2 sprays to the inside of the lens.
- Spread the solution evenly.
- Rinse lightly with fresh or salt water.
Option 3: Saliva Method (Traditional)
- Apply saliva evenly to the inside of the lens.
- Rinse lightly.
Managing Fog Underwater
Experiencing fog underwater is a normal occurrence and can be easily remedied without surfacing.
Procedure for Clearing a Fogged Mask:
- Slightly lift the top of the mask skirt away from your forehead to allow a small amount of water to enter.
- Look down and swirl the water across the inside of the lenses to clear the fog.
- To clear the water, look upward, press firmly on the top of the mask frame, and gently exhale through your nose.
Vision will be restored immediately.
Mask Care & Best Practices
To maintain your mask's performance and longevity, adhere to the following best practices:
- Regular Cleaning: Clean your mask thoroughly with fresh water after every use to remove salt, sand, and debris.
- Consistent Preparation: Apply an anti-fog treatment before every dive.
- Handling: Avoid touching the inside of the lens with dirty or oily fingers.
- Storage: Store your mask in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat.
- Maintenance: Replace your commercial anti-fog solution when its effectiveness begins to decrease.
